Born as an idea at the Million Mom March on May 14, 2000, ASK Day was organized by Brady United Against Gun Violence in partnership with the American Academy of Pediatrics. It’s a yearly reminder to parents to consistently ask if there is a gun in the home of where your child is going to play, and if it is securely locked and stored. The ASK (Asking Saves Kids) campaign date has since been set at June 21, as that is the first day of summer, and children are now out of school and playing at their friends’ homes more frequently.
It’s apparent that getting firearm regulations passed will be a hard task for the foreseeable future. So it’s important to look for solutions to firearm tragedies in other ways too. Asking these kind of common sense questions and offering information about safe storage are simple, everyday actions that really work and cut across partisan lines. In a recent survey, “nearly 3 in 4 Americans support safe storage policies, including 57% of gun owners.”
Below are a few resources, videos, and stories concerning the lifesaving act of simply asking about guns in the home.
