Webinar: Debunking Gun Violence Myths
GVPedia President Devin Hughes discusses his organization's founding and its goal to expose gun lobby lies
GVPedia Founder and President, Devin Hughes, was recently invited onto a webinar, sponsored by AAUW Naperville Area (American Association of University Women), to discuss the organization’s central focus — the damaging myths of the well-funded gun lobby.
The hour-long discussion begins with GVPedia’s start in the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012, which Hughes says shook him to the core. A burgeoning investment advisor as a college junior, Hughes soon used his free time to dive deep into the hard facts and stats of our American gun violence epidemic.
“When I started researching the topic,” says Hughes, “I realized that there was a substantial disconnect between where the public discussion was on one hand and where the academic research was on the other. And that there were a ton of myths out there in the field.”
Using graphics and questions from viewers and host Lee Eastman, President of AAUW Naperville Area, Hughes touches on his own experiences with guns, the frustration of pursuing gun safety legislation, and upending the firehose of falsehoods spread by the gun lobby.
