Suicide Prevention Week - September 8-14
The risk of suicide is three times higher in a home with a firearm
Suicide Prevention Month began in 2008 as a way to openly acknowledge the problem, raise awareness of its possible causes, and disseminate information about where those thinking about or affected by suicide could find help.
Yesterday we highlighted both Firearm Suicide Prevention Day and World Suicide Prevention Day. Both are part of National Suicide Prevention Week, September 8-14.
The gun violence prevention movement is well aware of the predominant role of guns in the overall tragedy of suicide. As reported by the Association of Health Care Journalists:
“The risk of suicide is three times higher in a home with a firearm. Firearm suicide is by far the most lethal method someone can use to take their own life, with a mortality rate of about 90%.”
Today we gather articles from our first year and a half of Armed With Reason that deal with suicide, with a focus on firearm suicides, gun lobby myths that downplay the problem, and how to help impede this growing tragedy.
