Six Years of GVPedia - Part 4: GVPedia Explains
Utilizing video content as another tool to fix gun lobby myths.
This month marks the sixth anniversary of GVPedia. To celebrate the occasion, we want to highlight some of our successes in the cause of gun violence prevention. This is the fourth entry in a six-part series.
Back in 2020, the pandemic made us slow down and reflect on how we could really be intentional in our work. We saw the importance of being proactive rather than reactive — and the best way to do that was to share the facts about gun violence with advocates and educators.
From this pause and reflection came “GVPedia Explains…” and “GVPedia Explores…,” virtual meetings that dive deep into gun violence topics and provide a space for elevating other voices in the movement.
In these 60-minute video sessions, we cover a variety of GVP topics, from safe storage to gun laws, with the intention of educating on some topics and learning from experts about others.
Here are some examples of these sessions:
GVPedia Explains…Gun Laws: This conversation focused on common myths around gun laws, as well as how to communicate the effectiveness and importance of gun laws.
GVPedia Explains…Data: This conversation focused on data, its importance in the gun violence prevention movement, and how individuals and organizations can use data in advocacy efforts.
GVPedia Explains…Gun-Free Zones: This conversation provided counterarguments to the myth that shooters target gun-free zones.
GVPedia Explores…the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms: GVPedia invited in Mark Jones, a former agent at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) to learn more about the bureau, how it functions, and how it fits into gun violence prevention.
GVPedia Explores…Comprehensive Solutions to Gun Violence: For this talk, GVPedia was joined by Dr. Cassandra Crifasi, Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health; James Timpson, Director for Community Partnership and Safety for Roca Maryland and Roca Impact Institute; and Po Murray, Chair of Newtown Action Alliance and GVPedia Board Member, to discuss the need for a multi-faceted, comprehensive approach to reducing gun violence. The panel highlighted the importance of laws such as Permit-to-Purchase, in addition to the need for community led solutions.
