As there is a pause at the Federal level for gun violence prevention, the most productive action has moved to the local level. Every other week, we bring you the Regional Wrap to get you caught up on gun violence prevention news that might be happening right in your town.
There was so much local GVP news over the last few weeks, we’ll have another Regional Wrap for you tomorrow.
ALABAMA:
VIDEO: Hospital security concerns grow after deadly shootings at DCH, Baptist Health Brookwood
“The fatal shooting of a Tuscaloosa nurse is intensifying concerns about safety and security at hospitals across central Alabama, following another deadly shooting earlier this year at a Birmingham-area medical facility.”
CALIFORNIA:
California ‘failing victims’ of violent crime as financial support plummets
“A new report from Californians for Safety and Justice (CSJ)… has found that since 2019, the California Victim Compensation Board (CalVCB) has been awarding less to victims and denying more applications for relief, despite having more money in the fund.”
County Supervisors OK gun violence prevention program for Spring Valley
“The approval expands the No Shots Fired program, which was started in 2021 in partnership with the city of San Diego, according to board Vice Chair Monica Montgomery Steppe’s office. According to her office, the program ‘has demonstrated measurable success through proactive, community-centered approaches….’”

“The new measure builds on a 2023 Colorado law that bans the manufacturing of firearms or firearm parts by anyone who is not an accredited gunsmith. It now specifically includes 3D-printed guns and expands penalties for violations.”

KANSAS:
VIDEO: Wesley Healthcare partners with Cure Violence ICT to address gun violence
“The hospital said it treats hundreds of people who have traumatic injuries from violent assaults in Wichita. Wesley’s trauma team will identify these patients, and Cure Violence will work with them to prevent any future acts. The organizations said addressing community violence is easier when they are working together.”
MARYLAND:
Baltimore gets federal funds for violence reduction as shootings, homicides decline
“Mayor Scott said the funding will help expand the program, but did not share specifics. Last month, the mayor expanded GVRS into the Northern Baltimore Police District, meaning the strategy now reaches more than half the city’s population.”

Firearm suicides exceed gun homicides in Maryland
“The trend, however, is not driven by a significant increase in suicides involving firearms in Maryland, but a steady decline in homicides.”
