GVPanorama - Red Flag Laws are Increasingly Being Used to Protect Gun Owners in Crisis
The laws’ effectiveness though relies on their implementation
While red flag laws are often suggested as protection against an abusive partner, the laws are meant to temporarily take a person’s weapon if the gun owner is deemed to be a potential danger to themselves or the community. In this recent piece from Stateline, the focus is on the way ERPOs that stem from red flag laws can be used to help gun owners at risk of self harm or harming their family. The problem is, in the 21 states where these laws currently exist, citizens are not always aware of them or understand the scope of their use.
“But the laws’ effectiveness relies on their implementation, supporters say: Law enforcement and judges must be trained properly and the public needs to be aware that the law exists.”
