GVPanorama: Gun Violence in Black Communities
High rates of gun violence have been forged by past and present racial discrimination
Today’s GVPanorama is a share of a new, wide-ranging report from Giffords Law Center on the continued threat of gun violence in black communities.
The rising rates of gun violence in Black communities, particularly among young Black men, have proven to be maddeningly consistent, “a direct cause and consequence of the systematic, structural disadvantaging of these populations.”
Despite the depth of grim statistics compiled in this piece — and the expected inaction from the Trump administration — there is hope offered here via legislative ideas and support for community violence intervention programs that have proven to be effective in stemming gun violence.
“The vast majority of shootings in these cities — and in similar communities across the country — are perpetrated by a very small number of people. But the impacts of this violence are felt across entire communities, contributing to generations of trauma and collective grief that have disproportionately affected Black people.”
